Meeting Mark from Kangkung Cottages in East Bali

Back in 2003 I took a road trip out to East Bali and stayed at a guest house ran by an Aussie guy named Mark. His place, Kangkung Cottages, is located close to the beach in Jasri, a small village between Candi Dasa and Amlapura. Mark is a character and tonight he showed up at the going away party in Seminyak.

Kangkung Cottages is hard to find, partly because there are no signs and Mark doesn’t advertise. I only made it there because someone took me there. Looking back to that road trip it was awesome, a new part of the island for me and a real vision of what Bali could be like. Swimming in that fresh water stream next to the ocean, in the slope of Gunung Agung, what more could you ask for?

If you want to check out Kangkung Cottages, its located off to the right side of the road leading to Amlapura from Candi Dasa. You will come to a sharp left hand bend on the main road, with a small statue off the the right, take that road for 5 minutes and ask a local. He has 8 rooms, around 100,000rp per night. Oh, and while I remember, Mark told me to mention that there is absolutely no surf in Jasri at all (even when it gets swell).
