S. Sulawesi talks about introducing Sharia law

S. Sulawesi is talking about introducing Sharia (Islamic ) law to the region. Some parts of Indonesia, eg. Aceh already have Sharia.

Sulawesi has a mixed religious population, especially in the central region. For us westerners, the idea of public floggings and chopping hands off for stealing seems barbaric. I don’t think they take it take far, but things like dress code, observing prayers and studying the Koran are very important.

According to the Jakarta Post, non-Muslim and some Muslim residents of S.Sulawesi have voiced their opposition to Sharia. Non Muslims are uncomfortable with Sharia being introduce by law, instead of culturally among Muslims, while other believe some aspects of Sharia are too strict and biased.

My first thoughts are that Sharia doesn’t sound a very fun system to live under, much like Communism in Eastern Europe. I’m sure though for conservative people it has its merits, keeping everyone in check and providing a rigid framework in which to live and raise a family.
