Bali bombers may meet death sooner rather than later

Bali bomber Amrozi, Mukhlas and Samudra may meet death sooner than expected. All are on death row awaiting the legal process to run its course. When they were transferred to Jakarta from Kerobokan jail there was a big local protest outside the jail. Balinese people want them dead, there’s no 2 ways about it.

I was talking to a young, from Singaraja the other day and he told me “many maling (thieves) in Singaraja.” I asked him where they came from and he said they were locals. I asked what people do when they caught a ‘maling‘ and he said the people would hold them until the police came. I asked if that was all they did, and he said, if the police did not arrive quickly the people would beat them, sometimes killing them. Was this accepted behavior? I asked. “Yes, must kill maling.” he replied.

So most people here don’t have a problem with justice being dealt harshly and swiftly. Death penalty for the bombers is the minimum a lot of people would like. Denpasar Prosecution’s crime section head, Wayan Suwila, traveled to Java to talk with relatives of the bombers, asking if they intend to seek clemency. I they do not, the process for execution will proceed.
