A cool head demands care over pornography bill

The anti-pornography bill has stirred the blood of Balinese people because of the direction it is coming from, Muslim Java. One voice of calm was Muslim cleric, Mustofa Bisri, who represents 40 million Muslims. Bisri said ” “The House should accommodate as many people’s aspirations as possible,” referring to the mulit-cultural make up of Indonesia.

If you go back to the 1930’s and even later, you will find Balinese women selling fruit at the local market and in the street, wearing just a sarong around their waist. No one was outraged or insulted. If the anti-pornography bill is pased in its present form, people’s attire will come under the law. Women will not be allowed to show their shoulders or legs and can be jailed for doing so. Forget about enjoying the beach.

Bali has a $4 billlion a year tourist industry. Surely cool heads will prevail and everything to support that industry will be done.
