Reasons to visit Denpasar Bali

Most visitors to Bali don’t visit Denpasar. To be honest its not set up as a tourist resort and is home to Balinese and many people from Java. The best was to get around Denpasar is either in a car a with driver, or in a taxi. The one-way system and volume of traffic can be frustrating if you don’t know your way around.

Reasons to go to Denpasar include: Visiting Pasar Badung, the multi-level market that is a hive of activity. This is located on Jl. Veteran. Sampling some of the styles of food available on Jl. Teuku Umar. Drive down this street and both sides of the road offers fodo from all over the country at an affordable price.
Visit the American / Australian consulate in Renon. Visit the District court, Robinsons & Matahari Department stores, all on Jl. Sudirman. Puputan Square, the site of the famous mass-suicide in 1906. Puputan Square is also the site of the Bali Museaum. Denpasar has a selection of hospitals, clinics, banks (including CitiBank on Jl. Teuku Umar) and other handy stuff. There are hardly any bars or nightclubs and you won’t find large groups of foreigners here.
The Bali Arts Festival is in June-July. Located at Taman Budaya Cultural Center on Jl. Nusa Indah. Worth a visit just ot see the Balinese dancing. Check the schedule before you go, as the dancing is scheduled for the morning and evening.
Denpasar is the main manufacturing center of Bali and has many small factories knocking out t-shirts and other junk. Ask anyone in Kuta the cheapest place to buy things in bulk and they’ll say Denpasar.
For first time visitors to Bali, the airport is called Denpasar, but is not located there, it is actually in Tuban, south of Kuta.
