Borneo Shop: Mats & Bags on Jl. Padma Utara

Legian is loaded with bars, restaurant and shops and yesterday I checked out what was going on on Jl. Padma Utara (north). Handicrafts galore are a feature over here, some coming from other islands (batik form Java, carvings from Papua, ikat from Sumba), some getting made a few miles away and some that is actually made in the shop. Borneo Shop, sells bags and mats, like the sign says and passing I saw the guy sitting there with little production line going on. In a Kuta shop you might pay 80,000rp for one of these type of bags, but I’m sure you could get a better deal here.

The mats they make are the large thin roll out type that are useful if you want to lay on the floor. I said said hell to the staff, but didn’t chat as he was busy. He was varnishing the bags, which when dry, will have a darker fiber added for pattern. The sign on the shop says ‘Jl. Werkudara / Double Six but its actually Jl. Padma Utara.
