Taking Jevon to see Ogoh Ogoh in Seminyak Bali

Wednesday night around 8pm I got a message from Ika who was out on Jl. Seminyak with Jevon and her sister Ningrum. ‘Ogoh ogoh about to move’ was the message, and it meant the giant monsters set upon bamboo supports were about to be carried up and down the street. Walking out from the house I could hear gamelan music in the distance and on the way down my gang stopped to photograph a beautiful offering outside a neighbor’s house. This is a special time of year and the quality of the offerings rises.

This one is highly decorative and contains fruit, 2 square canang flower petals and banana leaves. Being placed on the floor, it is an offering to appease the demons. Tonight you can see these special offerings all over Bali. Out on Jl. Seminyak it was a zoo with locals and foreigners lining the street. Ogoh ogoh were coming down the street, some carried by young boys. Older boys like to get the platforms saying and sometime even accidently run into the crowd. After meeting up with Ika, Jevon and Ningrum I headed down towards Bintang supermarket, behind the flurry of activity. There was a festival atmosphere, people laughing, no traffic and people snapping photos. Around Jl. Double Six they turned around and came back. Most people were hanging out close to Bintang and I snapped a short clip of the ogoh ogoh action.
