Nyepi evening in Seminyak Bali

Nyepi evening was super quiet and super dark. I literally could not see any light outside, or hear any noises other than nature. After the bbq action, we got comfy and tried some of the ‘competitively priced’ DVD’s that I picked up the other day. Our choice was ‘The Italian Job‘, a remake of the 1960’s Micheal Caine flick where a group of robbers drive around in circles in Mini Coopers. The DVD worked and had English subtitles for Ika and Ningrum. The funny thing about a lot of these DVD’s is the sound. I’m not a tech person, but it occurs to me there are many recording levels in the movie. During a dialogue scene we’d turn up the volume to hear the people speak, then BOOM!!!, someone would fire a gun or drive a speed boat and we’d be up to 150 decibels.

We kept our lighting low, using just a couple of candles placed in strategic locations. The fact that my house is away from the main street, has high perimter walls and does not have Balinese neighbors, meant we could get away with a bit of loose noise and light. We took a couple of photos using a tripod and a long exposure. They are blurry, but give you an idea of the scene. If you have a small group of friends it can be fun, to sit in a close group, share food in candle light enjoy a more peaceful evening.
