Beetroot is a winner in Seminyak Bali

After looking at that fat beef sandwich on the BBC website I had to try to recreate it. At Bintang I bought some minute beef (6,500rp), tomatoes, organic lettuce and New Zealand cheese (35,000rp), something like brie I think, with a hint of blue cheese .

Back at the house Ika, Ningrum and Awang were getting into a large box of martabak (spelling?) a greasy fried snack they bought at the pasar malam (night market ) in Seminyak. We live on different planets, food wise, and they look at me like some space alien, slicing salad and applying tangy mustard to my half loaf, bought at Bread Station.

The other day I was telling Ika about the carrot, beetroot, ginger juice I drink after working out. She had told Ningrum and Awang about it, and they were trying to work out exactly what ‘beetroot’ (beets to you Yanks) was. Awang thought it was an onion, while Ningrum thought it was long white string beans. Tonight I brought in a bunch, (14,000rp for 4 big ones) and steam cooked them. Reactions were positive, as it tastes rather sweet.

My footlong beef sandwich went down a treat, and I make no apologies for deviating from my twice a day Indo food schedule. I’m a foreigner, and sometimes I like to act like one. Bintang and Bali Deli imports a lot of produce, and you can get items you miss. Be sure to check the price on the packet, as I’ve been burned before buying imported brocoli.
