Mt. Merapi warning in Central Java

Mt. Merapi located in Central Java is giving indications of a possible eruption. Merapi is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and last exploded in 1994, killing 43 people. An eruption won’t directly affect Bali, but will affect Yogyakarta which is only a short distance away.

When I visited Yogya in 1993, a Canadian friend of mine climbed Mt. Merapi wearing flip flops and told me he almost killed himself. In 1994 an eruption on Merapi created pyroclastic flows that traveled 5 miles. The recent warning put Mt. Merapi on the second highest level of danger.

There have been volcanic warnings in Bali recently.
