Jakarta police chief asks Playboy not to publish 2nd issue

Indonesian Playboy magazine has had so much free publicity, that it sold out of its 1st copy. The publicity was largely due to religious groups demanding it be banned, as it had a reputation as a vehicle of pornography.

Conservative religious groups in Java, have been pushing for the anti pornografi / pornaski bill to pass, and the release of Playboy Indonesia is a red flag to a bull. Indonesian Playboy contains no nude photography, but that doesn’t matter to some people. The Playboy name is enough to get them hot under the collar. One fundamental group offered thinly veiled threats of attacking magazine stores, if Playboy wasn’t banned. The police chief obviously can see trouble brewing.

As strange as it may seem, pornography is widely available in Indonesia, with many people telling me they like it (especially the women). On the day before Nyepi, I went riding around trying to find a regular DVD store, for some mainstream movies. Stopping at one that was closed the guy told me, “Sorry closed, but I can get you porno movie.” I declined, but its not exactly hard to find if you want it.

Would be nice to get a review of the 1st Indonesian Playboy to see if it was any good.
