Islamic protestors attack Playboy offices in Jakarta

Offices of men’s magazine Playboy were attacked today by member of ultra conservative Islam Defenders Front (FPI). The group had filed a police request to demonstrate against the publication of the magazine, but things got out of control.

Two Jakarta police officers were injured requiring hospital attention and windows of the office were smashed. Playboy contains no nude images and the editor promised it never will. Erwin Arnada said ” “Playboy Indonesia is in full compliance with Indonesian law and does not, and will not, contain any nude photography. We have also taken extra measures to prevent the magazine from being read by minors, including selling the magazine in a sealed envelope and placing an ‘adults only’ label on the cover.”

South Jakarta police chief Sr. Comr. Wiliardi Wizard suggested Playboy halt publication for a while to avoid further conflict. The leader of the Islam Defenders Front, Habib Riziq, said in a typically balanced fundamentalist way, “If the magazine continues to be distributed, the FPI is ready to go to war.”
