Bali Bombers firing squad coming soon

The 3 individuals responsible for the outrageous attack on innocent people in Bali, in October 2002, are all going to face the firing squad at some point.

Yesterday relatives of Sumadra, told prosecutors that he would not ask for clemency. Today relatives of Mukhlas and Amrozi (the smiling bomber) told prosecutors in the Cilacap Java, they would also not seek clemency. Prosecutors want to speed up the process, as their image and cause could be fanned by religious extremists.

Back in 1993 I was in Cilacap and while waiting for a ferry, was invited to a local’s house for coffee. It was one of those ‘third World travel cliches’ where half the village is outside, after news of 2 foreigners in town spread. Everyone was super nice, even though Cilacap is a nasty little hole in the ground. For people traveling across Java, there is a section that includes Cilacap (pronounced ‘Chilachap’) whereby you take a ferry along a stretch of coast that is rather like sailing along a river.

We could be hearing about the demise of the 3 Bali Bombers sooner rather than later.
