Bali has a wide variety of activities and items of interest, ranging from surfing, scuba diving, spas, temples, shopping, nightlife etc. Bali also has a whole selection of places with decent accommodation, whether the want the affordability of Kuta, the trendy locale of Seminyak, or the luxury of Nusa Dua, you’ve got options. One area that is beautiful, affordable, relaxing, close to Kuta, with great beaches, is the Bukit Peninsula. Unless you’re a surfer, the likelihood is you’ll only go to the Bukit for a fancy hotel, or a trip to Uluwatu temple. You should look again, because there are some great places to stay.
Driving from Kuta, you can get to Bingin, Balangan, Dreamland and Padang Padang in under 30 minutes. The Bukit is fast developing, but right now its still a part of Bali that feels like Kuta did, 30 years ago.
Most places don’t have AC, but many places are family owned, and in the laid back environment, overlooking the ocean, you will make friends and have more time to relax, than in hectic Kuta. Transport is the big factor of course, so as soon as you figure out your solution, the Bukit is close by.

Hey guys i just visited bali for the first time , after reading this site and the info was a great help thankyou. I decided to stay in a surf camp as i was on my own and i was worried about getting around and surfing on my own.I stayed in http://www.rapturecamps.com ,they are in Padang padang was very central to all the breaks i was surprised at the amount of places to stay with surfing and without. I was there in bali for a month , i also stayed in a resort in semiyak which was a great experience but quite expensive for my budget i prefer a mix kind of holiday bit of hotel luxury and a bit of surfing with the surfers from all over the world. I met loads of people from all over the globe. If any one was to travel to bali i would recommend minimum 3 week stay. If you surf go a surf camp for atleast a week of your stay as they have guides , drivers , food and i noticed that they cater for more high class accommodation now kind of like hotels with bungalows. I guess competition is high so they need to keep up with the big guns (hotels). I would also recommend a motor bike as there like 1 dollar a day and its alot easier to get around. I also visited Ubud , the elephant farm , the slippery slide place in kuta and many other things whilst in the camp as i wanted to visit these kinds of things with other people and i found it easier in the camp as they all wanted to visit them to and alone it might have not been as interesting , but i had a ball the best place ive been , so thankyou baliblog for convincing me to visit..
My partner and I travelled to Bali between 20 October –> 1 November. We stayed at Rocky Bungalows in Uluwatu where we had all our valuable (passports, credit cards, cash, licences) stolen from our room. Some of our Australian currency was found on one of the staff looking after the bungalows. There were only two people looking after the whole complex, and we left our room for no longer than 2 hours to go for a swim at Padang Padang Beach. I am writing to warn everyone not to stay at Rocky Bungalows. The hotel owner did not care about us (even though I only had 5000 Rupiah in my pocket!), he was aggresive and extremely rude and blamed us for not storing our valuables properly. The premises had no form of security box and safe, so we hid our possessions in the room. The Balinese Police could not (or didn’t want to) help us, and it seemed that the owner (Rocky) had an bond with the Police, so the chance of us getting our belongings back were slim to none.
I urge anyone who is planning a trip to Bali to STAY AWAY form Rocky Bungalows. Your valuables are not safe in the room and the owner is extremely aggressive. Best you book accommodation that has security boxes where you can store your valuable, because it is the most horrible feeling to have your stuff stolen in a foreign country.
The Police, nor the hotel owner would let us call home to cancel our possessions. I had to go back to Kuta where a lovely Australian couple helped us contact Australia.
Hi, i was very shocked to read your comment about Rocky Bungalows (not that i am disputing you in anyway) I have stayed at the above each time i visit Bali (normally 3 times per year) i have never had a problem, we have actually gone out and left our rooms open and nothing has ever been touched, i have always found the staff and Rocky to be very polite and helpful, i have always loved the place and that’s why always return there and am actually going to Bali on tuesday and have again booked into Rocky’s, i do feel for u and your situation (i myself in kuta had $6,000 taken out of my keycard, no explanations, no help from police, no refunds or compensation in oz, so i know how you feel) but i just felt i had to comment on Rocky’s as this has really shocked me.
