Birthday party at the Southern Cross in Kuta Bali

Friday night I was invited to the birthday party of Ben from England. Ben is 35 and a surfing friend of Palu and the crew. The place was the Southern Cross beach-front restaurant and bar, in Kuta. Located on Jl. Pantai Kuta next to the Circle K and close to Kama Sutra, the Southern Cross is a place I have passed before but never thought of as a place I want to hang out in.

We had the entire upstairs area which had a roof and was open-air at the sides. Decor is very simple but for a large group who want to hang out and create their own time it is ideal.

Ben was sharing his birthday with a German student Claudia and there were probably 40 people in total. I was drinking arak madu and ordered a grilled tuna for dinner, which was 39,000rp. The fish was good and I think most people enjoyed their food.

An old friend of our David (Devo) from Byron Bay is back in town and we caught up. At one point in the evening Ben said to me he was amazed at the control of the German students. He said that coming from England we have been almost programmed to want to chuck as much beer down our throats as possible. Most of the German students were sipping a juice or a beer. I relayed my experiences in Germany, where the waitress would deliver a round of beers and we would sip rather than guzzle. It is nice to be around people who do not need to get wasted to enjoy themselves.

I left around midnight after chatting with many people and doing my best for international relations.
