You will enjoy interacting with the Aussie guys and cute Japanese girls who have been going psycho all day in big waves. Your friend back home will be so jealous they won't be able to hide it. Sitting in interent cafes in Kuta I see surfers coming into check their email and the swell charts. People can be overheard calling their mates back home in Australia and the US and planning their surf tour to G-Land. Newcomers stroll around sporting their new expensive board shorts and t-shorts from Billabong and Quiksliver. The whole scene is infectious (and I'm not just talking about the Japanese girls). There is always a buzz about surfing and you will be talking about after catching a ripple.
The best way to go is to take a surf lesson with a western company that specializes in that. A cheaper way to go is to hire a local on Kuta Beach, but language problems are often a factor. The cheapest way to go is to rent a boards and do it yourself, which means you will makes all the mistakes before figuring out the answers.
Even if you are a platypus like me you should give surfing a try. Its great for a laugh even if you don't become a surfer.
