Surfers coming to Bali need reliable sources of information. I do my best to give info on beaches and guesthouses but for the real surf talk you need a dedicated surf-site. BaliWaves.com has been around since 1999 and the things I like are the in-depth surf descriptions and photos. These change by the day as do the great surfing mpegs. Another site that features swell period ad height is StormSurf.com
Knowing how to read these charts and checking them against a local tide chart in Magic Wave will ensure you maximize your time in Bali. Asking locals for their opinion on best times to surf and breaks cannot hurt either. Many times I have been down on the Bukit and seen lovely waves with half a dozen locals and no foreigners. I have also seen hundreds of people in the water at high-tide on Kuta beach.
By using the available data you can know before you go what the conditions will be like.

G’Day Nick,
Ditto on Chris’s comment. I rekon if I saw that thing in the surf, even thuogh it’s a dolphin,
I’d be paddling the other way just in case!.
That, or do a JC and walk on the water…
You’re sure that’s a shark Nick???Dude,you’re freaking me out…..
The best guidebook for Bali surf is INDO SURF & LINGO, available in all Kuta surfshops, or from http://www.indosurf.com.au. Plus it includes $200 worth of Free Food and Drink Discounts, surf trip discounts etc, so you save more than the books costs!
Erm, that photo doesn’t make me want to go surfing in Bali anymore. I quite like being alive…
That’s a wicked photo, Nick. Did you take that one?
