Checking in with a local surf school in Kuta Bali

Bali is famous for surfing and in the Kuta and Legian are there are various surf schools that will get you started.

I know the people at Bali Learn To Surf at the Hard Rock Hotel in Kuta and actually took leason there myself back in December. Since that time their main female instructor Jasmine has become Indonesia’s #1 female surfer, but still teaches in a new class called Surf Sisters, Bali’s onlly all-female surf school.

Surfing definitely is a male dominated sport and sometimes the ego trip shows through. Having a non-threatening, all-female class will suit some people very well.

For those who worry about drowning, getting eaten by sharks don’t worry, Kuta Beach tapers off very gradually and you can walk out 100 meters and still be only chest deep. As for sharks I’ve only been attacked twice in 9 monthes…kidding!

I would say giving surfing a try with a teacher ( not some beach boy who wants to date you ) can really add a lot to a vacation in Bali and maybe start you off on a whole new driection.

Today the surf on Kuta Beach was wonderful. Not too windy, clean waves with decent swell…perfect for beginners. As you can see there were a ton of locals in the water too tearing it up.

After you take a surfing lesson or 2 you might like to buy a new surfboard that you can use for the rest of your trip and take home to show your friends. I have some good friends who make quality custom boards so will be happy to set you up with a good board fro your size ( very important ).

Yeah Mark, my friend Palu was telling me the 2 most dangerous things for a beginning surfer are getting hit by your own board and getting hit by someone eles’s board.

Hey nick, I was there like 2 months ago and that was the first time i tried surfing too. Went to this school prosurf and they were a good bunch too… You mentioned about knowing a couple of friends that customise boards. I am pretty interested in getting to know them too. was thinking of getting a board for myself but i was too aprrenhensive of getting one because of the various sizes and length of the boards. Please drop me an email of the contacts you have. Migt be popping over to Bali again in december before headin down to the land down under.

Don’t know what a ‘metrosexual’ is but I’m happy staying on the safe side of the gender fence.

metrosexual has nothing to do with the sexuality
a metrosexual is in a way a trendsetter - the best example for a metrosexual is david beckham. always well and trendy dressed..
