Yesterday evening I was down on Poppies Lane II in Kuta at the shop of my friend Palu. He makes surfboards, does surf lessons and surf tours in Bali. We were joined by an older French guy named Alain, who Palu has named Frenchy. Frenchy is loves surfing and plans to rent a small apartment and live here 6 months of the year. While we were all chatting an older Italian guy came in and wanted to buy a board. Palu makes boards for beginners, starting with his 9ft yellow sleds he uses for lessons and graduating onto the standard white colored mini-mals.
The Italian guy said he has taken a surfing lesson a month ago at another surf school and wants to continue. Most people want a sexy pointy board although the biggest mistake most learners make according to Palu is going for waves that are too big on boards that are too small. The Italian told us he had rented one of Palu's boards from someone else and liked the 8' 2". He was wavering whether to get that or the 7'6". Palu said to him "How long have you been surfing?" The guy said "Every day for a month." Palu said "So 30 days surfing in your life so far. Where do you plan on surfing?" The guy said mainly Europe so Palu told him to get the biggie. Sporadic surfing means your progress will be slow.
After fitting the fins and leg rope, showing him how to wax he board and getting him a bag, he answered questions on airlines. Some airlines will try to charge you excess baggage for surfboards, others will let you bring 3 boards for free. What they tell you over the phone differs from what happens at the airport also. I will be detailing airports and surfboards later.
