Friday we had big surf in Bali. Not that I knew anything about if before a tourist told me and down at Palu's board shop on Poppies II he confirmed that it had been big for a week. People come all the way around the world to surf in Bali, from Brasil, Europe and the US. One of the great things about this island is the warm water and consistency of the waves, especially at this time of year.
I know nothing about surfing and Palu kindly explained how sets of waves work. Basically you might get 4 waves, 10 waves or 26 waves in a set, it's all different depending on where you go. The first wave is usually fairly small and often times the last wave is the biggest. Palu said wave sets roll in about once every 4 minutes and once every 20 minutes is a 'clean up set', dumpers that clean people like me out of the water. After telling some 'aqua corporal punishment' stories, of how he has dealt with people who have dropped in on him, Palu took me over to his new shop next to G-Land on Jl. Benesari.
Beginning surfers, if you want a good strong learner board and no bullshit go and talk to Palu. BaliWaves and WannaSurf are 2 sites that ofer useful surfing into on Bali.

Yes when it gets a big swell in Bali it certainly
sorts out the “men from the boys” so to speak.
Places like Padang Padang come to life.Beginners
should stick to Kuta beach or their hotel pool.
Now imagine me, surfing since I was about 13, 1st day in Kuta, super surf in the outside (Tuban), I looked at my girl and said, “I bet I can rent a board next to nothing” and she immediately shatters my dreams with a big “don’t even dream about leaving me here all alone!”.
So don’t come talking about big surf, I had to wait till I got back home to get some surf! Lives a bich!
Easy to fix Godinho.Book and pay for your lady to have a special treatment like at a day spa or 2hr
massage.Then go surf…
I could pay her heaven for a few hours that she would still be complaining about being left all alone. Anyway, the good surf was only on my first day in Kuta, and then it was too small for me. Eventually I left Kuta to Ubud and never came back to Kuta “full time”, and just gave up on the idea. Maybe I’ll go back next year with some friends, that way I can always blame them!
Great idea that this Blog…
:)
