Sitting talking to Peter Cox today, owner of SurfTravelOnline I was once again made aware of what a huge industry surfing is in Indonesia. Peter organizes tours for people all over Indonesia on live-aboard boats and his tours take people to Sumbawa, G-Land, Mentawai's a many other places.
Your average tourist to Bali will not venture very far out of the Kuta / Sanur / Nusa Dua resort areas. Yeah a day trip to Kintamani or Ubud might be thrown in, but for most people the southern area is where they will wake up everyday. Surfers on the other hand, are prepared to travel the entire length of the country, looking for surf and perfect un-crowded waves.
While we were talking a 35 year old guy from Florida came over and said he had just returned from the Mentawai's. He said is was awesome, great waves and although there were quite a few people in the water it was easy to go somewhere else nearby and get waves. He said the swell here in Bali would be great on the 16th.
SurfTravelOnline has one shop next to Good Luck on Jl. Benesari, one shop on Gang Ronta and they are opening another along from G-Spot, the surfer bar clsoe to Brasil. (G-Land is out of business by the way).

There are a lot of reefsharks buth there not dangerous just the occasional tigershark could be a problem. But after been here a couple of times and now actually living here i never heard of any attacks. Traffic is a hell of a lot more dangerous in Bali and Indonesia in general. Just surf here it’s great!
I am deathly afraid of sharks from my few experiences with them. I have done some extensive research on sharks in Bali. speaking with fisherman, locals and the lot.
Bali is abundant with small reef sharks that are happily feeding on the fish that too is in abunance.
However, Tiger Sharks are rare but known on the West side. There have been no attacks on surfers/
There are quite a few Hammerhead sharks on the Sanur side beyond the reef. But no attacks there either.
Basically, unless your bleeding your ok.
Dont worry chicken curray, go surf.
I have visited Bali some 18 times over 3 decades and have on one occasion (Kuta beach) seen a huge shark early one morning. The water was very clear and at the base of a wave you could clearly see a very large shark some 12 feet or more long. I put it down as a tiger shark as I have dived on the outer barrier reef and been very close ot one…there is no mistaking tiger sharks. I was with a group of people including several Balinese who saw this monster. The only other time I have seen sharks around Bali was during a wall dive off Menjangan Island on the north side of Bali…these were only smallish reef sharks about 4 feet in length and very timid.
I am sure there are aggresive sharks around indo waters, but the surfers don’t seem bothered at all.
Have you heard of any shark attacks around Bali waters? Just curious.
