Where to get cheap liquor in Bali

liquorOne of the things that people like to do on holiday is indulge in a little liquid pleasure. Whether your favourite is Jim Beam, Jack Daniels or Absolut, finding an affordable place to pick up some supplies is important. People renting private villas may be especially interested in picking up a supply as room service may not be available. Two of the best places I can recommed for affordable liquor are Pt. Bali Surya Utama and Ud. Agung Grosir. You have no idea where either of those place are so I’ll carry on.

The cheapest place is Pt. Bali Surya Utama, located on the Bypass heading to Sanur. The 2 storey building is unmarked, identifiable by its green doors and location, which is roughly 300 meters after the intersection with Benoa harbor, or 100 meters before Macro supermarket. If you overshoot and miss it, park in Macro and walk back.

What makes this place good? Large selection and low prices. What are the draw backs? You have to drive halfway to Sanur and they are not flexible about their hours, arrive 5 minutes after 4pm and its ‘closed for the day’.

Today (July 21st 2007) the place was open. Driving into the front parking area you simply enter the building and go straight up to the second floor office. The staff will show you a catalogue of liquor and wine prices, you tell them what you want and a short while later you go down to the warehouse, situated out back and pick up your order. Here is a sample of items on sale here with prices.

Australian & French wine
French & Californian wine
S.African, NZ, German, Chilean, Italian, Portuguese, Sparkling wine and Champagne
Aperitif, Brandy, Cognac, Gin, Liquer
Liquer, Rum,
Tequila, Vodka, Whisky,
Vermouth, Minature, Beer, Korean

Prices are decent with a bottle of Stolichnaya at 100,000rp. Browsing through the extensive inventory one will see they have listed all their commercial customers in the back, in true Indo style, for all to see. Flicking through its like a who’s who of Bali hotels and restaurants, a good indicator that things don’t get much cheaper.

This place is open 9am-4pm Mon-Fri, 10am-12pm Sat

Pt. Bali Surya Utama
Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai #17A

Denpasar Selatan

If you still can’t find it here are the co-ords

08 42 59 S
115 13 09 E

For those people in the Kuta / Semniyak area who don’t fancy searching for the warehouse, just head to Bintang supermarket in Seminyak. Located next door is Ud. Agung Grosir, easily identifiable by the liquor bottles in the window. Prices are decent and they are open all hours 7 days a week.

Myers dark rum was 165,000rp and Sauza Gold tequila 188,000rp.

Hello Nick!

I am a regular reader of your blog, and find it enjoyable.
I will be returning to Bali this November, and would like to meet you over a beer somewhere in Seminyak. Hope you’ll be on the Island then.

All the best!

Yes, it is very odd. Wine and spirits are almost completely sold out everywhere! Rumors keep circulating that the customs department is holding all imports, because they are making new regulations. Anyone know the background on this?
