Heading back to Bali this time will be my first time using VOA. I have to organize my paperwork because while in London I got a new passport. Living in Bali my passport fills up quickly with stamps and I expect to have to get another one in 3-4 years.
VOA means someone like me can arrive at Denpasar and get a 30 day visa, for US$25. There is a money changer who will convert your cash into US$. VOA is available to citizens of 37 countries including the UK, and is not extendable. In my experience of waiting for people arriving in Bali, the VOA is fast, they have figured it out, and the entire time from when someone steps off a plane, to when they are out of the airport can be anywhere from 25 minutes to 1 hour.

Last time we went to Bali [from Australia], we gave them an AU$50 note each and got the correct change in Rupia at a fair rate. This gave us more than enough to pay for a taxi to our hotel at the airport taxi office and for a few small purchases.
I understand that the VOA people will accept a variety of foreign currency, not just US dollars. But always best to check, if you’re not sure.
