Vespa’s are the original scooter. Indonesia has 4 million of them according to some people and some foreigners have been known to seek out the better ones for export. At Sport & Automotive Shop in Legian, 4 good examples of Vespas are outside, waiting for their next owner. The shop is connected to Ikat Art Shop, at 484 Jl. Legian, which sells brightly colored paintings.
How much will a use Vespa set you back in Bali? I was told these were going for 7m rp each. You’ll be able to bargain for sure. The good points of a Vespa are fuel consumption, ease of operation and access to spare parts. Bad points could the low speed, lack of uphill power, the fact they’re already old and basically good for smaller people. I also don’t see any indicator lights on these bikes, which is not a good thing. Still for zipping around Kuta / Seminyak, you don’t need a Harley Davidson.
Expats have told me they have found good examples of old BMW motorbikes and VW cars over here, they intend to fix up and ship back. Locals are now aware of what these fetch overseas, so the prices went up. Keep your eyes open, you might see some fine examples of old cars and bikes in Bali.
