My visit to the XL building recently was a rather frustrating affair, getting my machine & cell phone set up with their system, only to hear I needed a land line. After all the good advice from Baliblog readers I decided to pay another visit to sort this ISP issue out.
This afternoon the polite staff listened to my request for home internet access, the fact that I had a laptop and a 3G phone. “Last time I came here you told me I needed a land line. Is that true?” I said. The staff said it was. “See some other people told me I didn’t, maybe it was the bill you wanted?” “It is like this,’ said the staff, “we need a telephone bill together with your credit card and passport.” “Can I use the rental contract on my house rather than a phone bill?” I said. “No, but you can use the phone bill of your friend.” she said. Okay, now we’re rolling! All I’ve got to do is borrow someone’s phone bill and I can give XL lots of money. We’re getting closer to getting online.

Hey Nick,
i can feel your pain on this one… i am also using XL with a 3G phone and it was quite annoying to get them to take the money
In the end they were ok with me giving them the adress of a balinese “friend” (in that case my in-laws). After a few days of waiting for their survey team to verify that i exist and god knows what i could finally pick up the sim card. Getting them to accept a foreign issued credit card for billing (i am really too lazy to go there every month to pay in cash) was another thing, but after a friendly talk and a “maybe u can ask your boss?” it all worked out. Eversince i am ok with XL. Wish you good luck and hope it all turns out fine.

Hi SJBali.
1. word ‘borrow’ in this case is not just like you ask a cigar to your friend. Of course there will be some term and conditions apply!
2. what is your main purpose to come and love bali rather that you expected something for free!!!

this indonesian say “… and if you smart enough don’t laugh to us because we cannot afford to buy motor bike with cash, and the fact that some expat companies illegally run their business in Bali and doesn’t issues salary report because they afraid of being checked by the government”.
.. and yes XL or “can we say Indonesian” are so stupid because we want to make sure that you will not run away after using their services, but then trying to make your life easier by providing your friend “salary report or family card or land line phone number”.
…and please if you don’t like many thing in this island, LEAVE!.
Thanks for the replies.
Say, The staff at XL were sweet and polite, I’m sure they were trying, and I also was trying to find a way to work with them.
By all accounts XL’s service is good and I can’t wait to check it out. They have no fear of me running away without paying for their service, because I have to choose a package beforehand (299,000, 399,000, 499,000rp ).
My sister in law said she can get me a phone bill.

Hi Nick.. well you see, but it’s kind of stupid, isn’t it? Borrow phone bill from a friend to prove that your address is valid?? haha..
It’s the same way how some Indonesian get a motorbike credit, borrowing the “family card” and “salary” report from a friend…LOL
So it means actually: if you don’t pay your bill later, they will get after the one you borrowed the phone bill from and he will insist to pay, because he can prove that he doesn’t use XL.. so on the end you will have it for free
