Travelling in Indonesia: An exciting experience

Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago. Most people outside of the country do not realize how large it actually is. Even the Texas Sheriff had to remark ‘shucks, its a lot bigger than I thought’ when was here last. Travelling through Indonesia’s 17,000 islands requires a variety of transport, including motorbike, car, bus, train, plane and boat. You have to be able to adapt, taking advantage of the local infrastructure. One recent visitor to Indonesia had a great time, and is glad he made it out okay.

Joe Kissel lists the 13 things he managed to avoid during his visit. Living here for 4 years and having travelled half the country myself, I have to say the dangers to tourists are overplayed by the media. If you want a safe, sanitized vacation, go to Singapore. The thing that is in danger there is your credit card. Indonesia offers amazing adventure opportunites, some of which are just being uncovered.

I suppose we all see our normal environment as safe. A few people I know from the USA and Canada ask if it is “safe” to visit here in Europe, because of the bird flu, terrorist activity, student riots, etc. Its information they have seen on the news.

Of course it is safe, the USA is the place you want to avoid because of the plane hi-jackings, muggings, bank robberies, alien abduction/invasion, etc, who would want to visit a place that has all that going on.

Bali is one of most beautiful and safest places to visit, the smiles on the peoples faces, tell the real story.

I had a Balinese say to me that we seemed like nice people, but that they wouldn’t want to go to a place where women kill their children. That was not long after that mentally ill woman in Texas had drowned her children.
