Touch Football Championships: Canggu, Bali

Besides soccer, my all time favourite game has to be Rugby whether it is League or Union. Australian Rules football I can watch and tolerate but it's not on the top of my list as favourite sports.

But this new game called Touch Football does intrigue me and probably because I have never seen it played. I imagine it is a bit like tag!. Whatever the case, the Indonesian Championships are coming up in August and are sure to attract some attention from locals and tourists alike.

Teams from across Indonesia will be represented in the Indonesian Touch Championships set to be held at the Canggu Club, Bali's first private member's sporting and recreational club, on Saturday August 19th according to the Bali Discovery.

Played in over 60 countries around the world touch is a non-contact sport played by both males and females and in mixed competition, in which the aim is to score as many touchdowns as possible.

Touch is an extremely popular sport in many areas of the world, especially in Australia and New Zealand, and is increasing in popularity in Asia.

For the social participant it is a fun, healthy and invigorating activity while at an elite level, it is a fast paced competitive sport that attracts highly skilled athletes

Teams from Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, Lombok and Sumbawa are expected to enter the competition with junior games also planned as part of the event.

Barrie - Touch footy is not like “tag”, the basics of the rules are the same as rugby League with the exception of tackling, instead you just touch the player with the ball. It is a much faster game and very competitive. Some of the dives to go over the touch line are absolutely amazing. I played for a season but have watched my stepson play for 10 years now in Perth. If you get a chance to watch the game I think you would enjoy it, especially if you like league.

I’ve played it a bunch in Brisbane and it’s great fun. All sorts of leagues across Australia to cater to every skill level and competitive interest - mixed teams, youth teams. Very fast paced, non-contact, with a focus on fundamentals, which makes it great for kids as well as those of us trying to justify the extra beer or burger.

Watching it being played at the highest level will be a totally different experience to playing it yourself, but no doubt very fun. Always a joy to watch excellence.

Barrie There are a number of venues as there are over 30 clubs in WA.
I know Monday nights are good comp nights, South of River: George Burnett Pk Manning rd Manning, North of River: Bennet Park, Shearn Cres Doubleview. Both of these grounds are pretty well set up with a bar and food available (no Bintang though - I will have to wait until October for one of those)
