Singapore and Indonesia to sign extradition treaty

Singapore will no longer be a place criminals from Indonesia can run to. Come Friday April 27th 2007, the 2 countries will have an agreement to implement a mechanism for extradition.

As it stands a person can commit a crime in Indonesia, fly to Singapore and not be touched. People have taken advantage of that in the past, including people embezelling large sums of money from positions in government.

Representatives from the Indonesian government admitted it might be too late to regain funds already moved to Singapore by wanted criminals. Incidentally Indonesia itself is a place where a lot of ‘dodgy money’ ends up for a ‘laundry cycle’.
