Sawo: An Indonesian fruit

sawoOnce in a while I get surprised by a local delicacy that for some reason I have not seen before. A while back it was the wani, the large white fleshy mango that only grows in Bali. Lovely stuff and recommended if you can find it. A recent find is sawo, the small brown fruit that could be mistaken for a kiwi on the outside, but is a chocolate color on the inside. The sawo has a most unique flavor, pleasantly sweet and with an almost bread-like aroma.

Sawo is a favourite with Muslims and a good place to find it is a market area favoured by Javanese. Ika bought a kilo of sawo at the fruit market in Kerobokan for 5,000rp. Easy to cut, about the same density as a kiwi, sawo has the same thin skin and white center which should be tossed away. Other than that you can dive in and I polished off half a dozen in about 10 minutes today.

Nick it is amazing the amoUnt of tropical fruits there are out there on top of the one you know about. There are too many to mention so i wont ok.

I think that paradise in paradise is a tropical fruit ripened and bursting with juice either in a fruit salad or in a delightful frozen glass served with a straq and sitting on a delightful beach…too die for me thinks.

I bet you cannot name a favourite Nick can you….i think one day it may be Papaya and the next day Guava…basically try em all eh !

You can as you have stated b4 Nick grow them in your garden as you do so when there ripe and ready get the old ladder out and pick them stright off the tree and into the pie hole.!!!
