Rip Curl Cup Trial at Padang-Padang
Tim Hain of ISC (Indonesian Surfing Championship) sent us an update on how things are going this season. Excitement is building for the upcoming Rip Curl Cup at Padang-Padang with international surfer lining up and great swell predicted. Here’s what Tim had to say.
International Pro Surfers Frothing To Get Into The Rip Curl Cup Trial at Padang-Padang
20 July, Kuta-Bali: The anticipation of a big swell arriving for the upcoming Rip Curl Cup Trial at Padang-Padang on July 24th has created a lot of buzz in the Bali surf community, and it just so happens that a host of international surfers are here and just frothing to get in on the action.
Names like Koby Abberton, Nathan Fletcher, Benji Weatherly, Kahea Hart, Marco Hart, Dean Brady, and 10 other international pro surfers that are currently here in Bali have put their hats in the ring and will be waiting for their chance to surf Padang-Padang with only 4 other guys in the water.
There will be three trial heats run before Round 1 runs on Tuesday morning, July 24th. The trial heats will be 5 man heats (as will be Round 1), with the top two point-scorers advancing into slots in Round 1. Round 2 will be run with 4 man heats. Currently there are 8 surfers on the alternate list who will be hoping for no-shows so they can jump into the open slot.
The Trial is expected to start around 8 pm on Tuesday morning and run through the trial heats and then Rounds 1 and 2. The tide will be dropping from a 1.4 at 8 am to a 0.8 at 11, then rising slowly to a 1.4 high at 4 pm. With the Rip Curl Swell Forecast showing an expected SW swell at 10-20 ft at 15 second periods, its shaping up to be a pretty epic session. No wonder everybody wants in!
With the Trial completed, the anticipation will build even further when the waiting period for the Rip Curl Cup starts on August 1st, as the 32 lucky surfers will be jonesing to get back out to Padang-Padang when they hear the words “IT’S ON!”
So sit down, shut up, hold on, and get set for the start of an epic event! See ya there!!!!!

I’m jealous Nick, I wish I could be there to see the championship surfing contest. sniff sniff Oh well, I can only hope you give a rip roaring account so all of us out there who can’t be there can see it through your eyes; if only through your journalist spot on style.
