Prisoner exchange possible in early 2007: Chris Ellison

Australian senator Chris Ellison, has said that a prisoner exchange deal between Australia and Indonesia, could be online in early 2007. Since Schapelle Corby was arrested a couple of years ago, and the likelihood of young Aussies spending a long amount of time in jail, became a possibility, the 2 governments have worked towards an agreement.

The plight of the Bali Nine is still up in the air, with 6 member currently on death row. That may change in future, allowing them to serve their sentence closer to their relatives. I did some reading up on extradition treaties and found that its a complicated business. Some countries sign solo treaties with one other country, others join a block of countries to sign an agreement. Certain local sticking points of often get in the way, for example Japan is willing to extradite foreign citizens, but not its own citizens. Othe countires have a problem, with the possibility of the death penalty. The prisoner exchange has its compications too, with the length of sentence / remissions / parole proceedure etc. having to agreed upon by both sides.

Hi Nick
I can understand the prisoner exchange from both the prisoners and their relatives perspective, obviously the prisoners would prefer to spend their incarceration in more comfortable surroundings, and the relatives would prefer to have them more accessable.
My concerns are two fold; I am leaning towards the argument that if they committed the crime in a foriegn country, they did so knowing the consequences.
It could be that those willing to take the risk could be more inclined to do so if they knew that if caught and sentenced to prison that they would be serving their time in luxury, in comparison to Kerokoban.
Converseley where do you think an Indonesian prisoner would prefer to spend their sentence? an Australian Jail or Kerokoban or similar. This exchange would work both ways
And lastly the current figures on keeping a prisoner, per day, in a NSW prison is $187.00. If you do the maths it becomes a fairly sizeable burden on the taxpayer.

perhaps if they had to pay that back to us, the taxpayer then they may reconsider their options. Or better still if the do gooder pollies had to foot the bill suddenly it would be no longer a viable option. Another option could be that their families pay for it. Based on a 20 year sentence that would come to $1,365,100. Coz I for 1 am not the least bit interested in paying for them.
Another point is if they came back here would their original sentences hold up or would they be reduced to practically nothing.
Shoot the ones on death row and keep the rest there for the remainder of their sentences. When they do get out we will barely remember their names.
