Bali is not just beaches, great shopping and nightclubs. It's an island steeped in culture and friendly people. Whenever I return to Bali, I like to get away from the tourist strip and head out into the countryside.
It is here where you find the real Bali. Hire yourself a vehicle or get someone to drive you to all regions of the island for diversity in scenery, magic beaches, ceremonies, temples and all that encompasses Bali. I generally like to stay off the regulated tourist tracks and take side roads that lead to villages rarely visited. It is here you will find the beautiful surprises that will make your Bali experience even more enchanting.
You will often pass a temple somewhere on the island where a ceremony is occurring. Stop and get out. Witness the goings on but always remember temple etiquette. If you are taking photos then do so discreetly and never use a flash. Chat with the locals and try some real Bali tucker with them as there is always some food being cooked near the temple.
Get off the main road and just drive. You never know what you will find just around the corner. I have eaten at roadside stall and warungs that sell the tastiest sates, bought the juiciest fruits off farmers, and had interesting conversations with locals who have been more than happy to chinwag the day away.
Bali isn't all beer, beaches, shopping and clubbing. Bali is an island that is 'alive' with spirituality. So, enjoy it and allow it to enter every sense in your body.
