Miss Indonesia, Nadine Chandrawinata is in hot water with a local Muslim group for participating in the Miss Universe pagent. The beauty contest took place in Los Angeles on Sunday, and was no different to beauty contests that have been going on for the last 40 years. Members of the Islamic Defenders Front feel differently however, complaining that Nadine’s participation is “actually insulting for Indonesian dignity and women.”

Islamic Defenders Front lawyer Sugito, said yesterday that complaints had been filed with the police against Nadine and 3 people who had helped her participate. One would assume that is a person is not breaking local laws, and participates in a beauty contest in another country, miles away, similarly breaking no laws, then people would be okay with it. Not these guys, they want control over people who are half way around the world. Sounds like the US govenment, extradicting people whenever they feel like it.

To me beauty contests are dinosaurs, and I’m actually amazed they still go on. Indonesia seems in a sense like Britain in the 70’s, so maybe they pay more attention to that kind of thing.
