familyMerry Christmas from Bali. Sitting here at a wf-fi place on Jl. Dhyana Pura in Seminyak, with my new laptop, there is no indication it is Christmas. Temperature is around 30C and the atmoshere is steamy. Great beach weather and for someone who doesn’t like Christmas, Bali is the ideal getaway. Friends of mine were going to Mass last night, and had to leave my bbq early around 7pm. Some staff at bars / restaurants around town are wearing small Santa hats and some places offer a Christmas dinner. Kori Restaurant on Poppies Lane II in Kuta usually does one. But really, in this heat, most people can’t be bothered.

Toby & Maya are staying at Hotel Sarinande in Seminyak. This morning I went over to help them out moving and doing laundry, and a staff member wished me Merry Christmas. Back at my house, my mother in law bought a kids paddling pool, so Maya and Jevon can splash around in the garden. We’ll be lucky to ever get him out of it.

Nick,

A very Merry Christmas to you, your family and friends. It is currently 16F (-9) in Denver and we are still digging out from 33 inches (84cm) of snow from a storm on Thursday - wish I was there!

Hello Nick (again)

It sounds as though you had a very relaxing and peaceful Christmas.

Christmas Day was great. I planned a surprise for the family by going to the Elephant Park and riding the elephants. It was a beautiful cool day and my son was thrilled. The Elephant Park was a great experience - you can feed the elephants, go for a ride - our elephant’s minder spoke good English and provided many details of interest not only for me, but my son.

The cost was US$137 which included transport both ways (excellent bus and driver), elephant ride and a buffet meal - not sure if it was good value - but I thought it was and made the day memorable.

We went to Christmas Mass at Francis Xavier in Tuban on Christmas Eve and it was a beautiful service, excellent sermon and choir. The security was tight but we never felt in danger during our whole trip.

We concluded the day by having dinner at the Dynasty which was ordinary and full of Aussie expats - not my ideal setting. My four year old was mesmerised by the Balinese dancers who performed the dance of the Ramanyana and were later followed by the Sexy Girl Dancers - he is still talking about it - “I could just watch them forever!” - his comment.

Christmas was delightful in Bali and my son thinks it is great that Santa still knows where to find him!
