Its been a while since the 2002 Bali bombings. The dust has settled, we now have a permanent memorial, annual services and Paddy’s Bar in now a surf shop. Indonesian film makers have put together a dramatisation of the Bali bombings, getting behind the scenes, and showing the personalities of the bombers, called ‘Long Road to Heaven‘.
Producer Nia Dinata said “I hope to bring back the conversation in Indonesia about tolerance and humanism, and part of that is having an understanding about the Bali issue.” The director of Long Road to Heaven, is Enison Sinaro, who said showing the bombers personal side was key to the film. Making a less than complimentary film about Muslims in a Muslim country, is bound to draw some criticism, but Sinaro is confident people will be objective, “We don’t want people saying we’re giving Islam a bad name, or degrading Islam - it’s nothing of the sort.” he said.
The movie opens in Indonesia on Thursday.
