How far will your money go in Bali

The Indonesian rupiah has a history of being somewhat volatile. During the Asian financial crisis in the late 90’s, people doubled their money here in Bali, or lost their money (depending what currency they were holding) overnight.

Using BootsnAll’s currency converter (the best in the world), we are able to get an up to date picture of how the mighty rupiah stacks up against other major currencies.

1 US Dollar = 9,074.41 Indonesian Rupiah
1 Australian Dollar = 7,521.60 Indonesian Rupiah
1 Brazilian Real = 4,471.69 Indonesian Rupiah
1 British Pound = 18,113.0 Indonesian Rupiah
1 Chinese Yuan Renminbi = 1,179.20 Indonesian Rupiah
1 Euro = 12,372.1 Indonesian Rupiah
1 Hong Kong Dollar = 1,160.29 Indonesian Rupiah
1 Japanese Yen = 75.95313 Indonesian Rupiah
1 Kazakhstan Tenge = 78.89419 Indonesian Rupiah
1 New Zealand Dollar = 6,717.06 Indonesian Rupiah
1 Singapore Dollar = 5,974.29 Indonesian Rupiah
1 South-Korean Won = 9.81670 Indonesian Rupiah
1 Sudanese Pound = 4,770.22 Indonesian Rupiah
1 Taiwan Dollar = 272.657 Indonesian Rupiah
1 Thai Baht = 279.047 Indonesian Rupiah
1 Ukraine Hryvnia = 1,888.06 Indonesian Rupiah
1 Vietnamese Dong = 0.57981 Indonesian Rupiah

Look at at Euro go! The poor old Vietnamese Dong won’t get you very far in Bali, but with a fistfull of Tenge, Borat might be able to buy himself a large Bintang.

Well, not exactly doubling and losing overnight–at least not in the medium term. Most hotels started quoting in US$ shortly after the crisis began (the quickest way around the problem), and places still quoting in RP simply raised prices. But those few days when US$ holders watched the RP dying, and before prices lists were altered, must have been glorious!

bali is cheap no matter your currency. spend freely and don’t drive a hard bargain because you can always make more money. easier than the common man in indo anyway.

Jamie-Lee, That all depends on how well off you want to live $50 a day is enough to cover a decent room, meals, drinks, beers etc.
