Enter the dragon: Komodo Indonesia

Most kids love pets and in western countries we’re talking about cats & dogs. Here in Indonesia the wildlife is a bit more diverse and sometime doesn’t take to the young ones as expected. As the China Post reports, one unlucky lad got too close to a Komodo dragon.

Komodo dragons are the world’s largest lizards (though some Seminyak expats could give them a run for their money) and possess razor sharp teeth. Their mouths are a bacteria pit, containing more than 60 different disease inducing nasties (sounds like my ex-girlfriend). Deer and other mammals are prey to this creature and after one vicious bite, nature and the humid climate take care of the rest.

On this occasion the 3 meter, 166kg gecko ambushed the little lad in the dunny, giving him no chance. Villagers on Komodo report the lizards are usually okay. Komodo island is the place to see the dragons in their natural habitat. If you want to visit the national park there you’ll have to go via Flores or Timor, since there is no airport / accommodation on Komodo.

Hi Nick: In Campuhan where I live when I’m in Bali I have seen twice a Komodo Dragon running across Agung’s soccer field (located on his property next to our house). When I first saw the thing I thought I might be hallucinating. Screaming bloody murder; the lizard was as frightened of me as I was of him because he ran lickidy split into the bushes which was the border of their rice fields. I had adopted five baby kittens from their family temple; although I never had owned a cat in my life. One became my favorite who I named Gouster (spelling) the nickname for the former president at the time…you know the blind one….anyway my gouster was blind in one eye from birth from an eye infection. I loved that cat; she acted like a tiger. Anyway she understood everything. One by one her brothers and sisters began to disappear at night. At first I thought they simply left and later when my gouster was about 1 year old her remaining siblings disappeared one night and the next evening she went out to hunt and never came back. Think a Komodo Dragon got her in the rice field? She never would have ran off. I asked all my Balinese family where did Gouster go. What happened to her? I believe they knew that Komodo got her and her siblings and they simply did not want to tell me the bloody truth. Motto: When in Bali keep your children close and your little animals closer at night because the big bad komodo will steal them into the night….forever.

Seems the Kid was taking a dump
The Dragon decided, not this time chump
One huge gnaw and a bit of a shake
From one Big lizard is all it takes

The moral of this, When you go in the bush
In Komodo at least, watch out for yer tush
