Campur means ‘mixed’ in Indonesian. Jevon is a campur kid, and like many others, was caught in a legal mess as far as his nationality. Logic would suggest, that if a kid was born in a country, to a mother who is a national from that country, the kid too, would similarly become national. Well logic doesn’t have much to do with what often goes on over here, and campur kids were considered foreingers, adopting the nationality of their father.
All that has changed. While I was in Europe, Jakarta has changed the rules, shaken the pack, come to its senses. Now campur kids can have dual nationality, until age 18. I met a German guy who had to divorce his wife, so he could somehow escape the kid’s visa fees and runs overseas. Traditionally Indonesia has had a control complex, and has been particularly wary of foreigners. The attitude was ‘now you’re married to an Indonesian, take her the heck out of here.’ President SBY is leaving no stone unturned, in order to generate foreign investment. Helping the foreign business community in Jakarta live their lives, without endless immigration details to worry about, is a great move.
I think Jevon is going to like being Indonesian and British

Hi there all,I am in a similar situation what with being driven out of Indonesia due to frequent and expensive Visas for our two Indo kids……sorry for sounding negitive but is there anyone out there that acctually has succesfully managed to get the So called dual citizenship and what is the cost and the procedure…..We have heard alot about it but still no conrete evidence or procedure has surfaced.we have rung our local embassy in Aust: but they simple say \\\\
Tony,
I have a friend whom just had a baby, born in Oz to Oz Mum & Balinese Dad, they are getting the baby an Indo passport…
He will have a visa in it to be a Permanent Resident of Oz, but an Indo citizen… So baby will not need to worry about visa’s etc if/when they return home….
But as to how to get Dual??? I will have to look into it!!!
To all
regarding duel citizenship for (Indo’s) children of mixed blood , i’m currently going through the same ordeal, upon reasearching the delema my indonesian friend in immagration tells me although the new duel citizenship law has been passed in parliment ,there still is no regulation for it as yet, and the regulation could take up to or longer than 12 months to draft, so it appears parents of (indo) children like myself will have to go through the 12 month stay visa and kitas dramas until the regulation appears, i hope my friend is wrong about the time given for the draft ,but i would’nt hold my breath.
Hi everyone.Grt website Nick, really helpfull & informative! I was at Indo Consul,Perth yesterday with my husband (Balinese)asking about dual citizenship for our 2 girls as we are moving to Bali in Jan 07,they’ve heard whispers about it but nothing set in concrete Yet! All they could say was maybe by end of year something definite, wait till then, typical answer!Anyway at the moment the only two choices are get them visas OR change there Nationality.Which one to choose???
Toni ,I have just contacted Indo consulate in Sydney, they have heard about the dual citzenship ,but have no forms to do the passports .
I am in the same situation ,my husband is Balinese and we are going to Bali and have two sons .The children are enrolled to start school in Jan2007 .The consulate answer is get a cable letter from Jakarta for 12 month visa or go on a 2 month visa and extend .Cable letter sounds the way to go if they answer my Fax or Phone call .
Up till now neither has ,so i hope you have better luck than me .They are hard to get info out of ,but I will keep trying .
Good Luck Kim
Hi well here is a news update on Dual Citzenship for mixed Indonesian children .The indo consulate have just rang me to tell me you must get their passports in Jakarta ,they have no paperwork in the consulates outside Indonesia .We are coming to Bali in January and the children must come on a sponsor social visa and extend in Bali, we can try to apply for them in Bali ,but no guarantees ,stll maybe a flight to Jakarta. It is still not so easy to stay in Bali even if you have a Balinese husband and children ,and the children are enrolled to study .So it looks like the long visa process
Kim
Hi Kim, the 12mth visa can only be obtained in Aust with a letter of sponsorship from the Director General of Immigration in Jakarta, that means you need someone, anyone,in Indo to go to Immigration & pay a fee & get this letter of sponsorship for you & kids & send it to you(you need to send relitive documentation to them first)My husbands uncle, who is a police kolonel in jakarta happens to be friends with the said D.G.I asked him about this letter of sponsorship, his reply,’why do they need to waste money on this when they are following husband/father they dont need visa to live in bali.AND according to him Dual Citizenship is already in effect.SO when the head of a Dept isnt 100% clear on his dept policy(foreigners need visas!)what can we do but to get a 2mth visa &deal with the other when we get to Bali.Easy! not, but one hurdle at a time. All the best. (P.S Im doing home schooling for my 2 at a cost of $540 fr both from “School of Isolated & Distant Ed” look it up under your states “Education web site”,saves you money & keeps you busy while in Bali) by all.
Toni,Thanks for your information .The Indonesian Consulate in Sydney has no paperwork to do dual Citzenship .We do not have any contacts in Jakarta ,only Balinese in Bali .We are going in on a 2 month visa and try and deal with Immigration Tuban when we get there The boys are enrolled in school ,we had their interviews in July ,they are happy to go to school there ,for the experience .Good Luck with your trip
Ever since my Balinese daughter-in-law had a child, I’ve said that I have a Balinese grandson. Now it’s official!
