Sunday morning after the Palu bbq I woke rather slowly and decided to get out of town for a couple of hours.
Ubud has a wealth of museums and galleries so without any planning I grabbed my camera and headed there.
On the outskirts of Ubud in the village of Lod Tunduh I saw a sign that said there was a jewelry museum just 500 meters away. I know there are a ton of places calling themselves galleries and are just shops with flashy display cases. I wondered what I would find.
Down a small lane that definitely does not see much traffic I saw the driveway to Museum RUNA, which I rode down. The quiet elegant buildings were a pleasant surprise and on arrival I didn’t see any staff on duty. Heading past the reception desk ( it costs 10,000rp to visit the museum) I walked upstairs to find one of the staff taking a nap and the other taking it easy. They laughed and told me they were sorry. I said no worries its Sunday morning. The first place I checked out was the upstairs gift shop featuring assorted silver jewelry and fine batiks and sarongs. I picked up one sarong to find it cost $250, the batiks were $25. Nice stuff but I’ll wait till my pay rise to shop here.
The RUNA House of Design and Museum is a celebration of the 25 years of jewelry making by Palar Runi from Bandung Java. The museum was opened in December 29th 2001 and named RUNA to include her husband Adrian’s first name.
Downstairs are the 2 museum rooms which featured glass cases containing elaborate silver jewelry by Runi. I find taking photos of things in glass cases difficult because of the reflection so I gently opened the cases to get an uninterrupted shot. The staff the were standing there and didn’t mind at all. They asked me why I wanted to take ‘banyak photos’ of jewelry and I told them I like looking at photos. I didn’t tell them it was for a website fearing the ’sorry you must ask boss for permission’.
I asked the staff if the items on show were there only for show or was this really a shop. They said the items were not for saleĀ but if you were interested you could enquire.
It seemed to me that most of the jewelry was elaborate and large, with a selection of pendants, broaches and necklaces. According to the free brochure Palar does brisk business overseas, not that she’s the one banging these things out.
Adjacent to the museum is a 2 storey set of rooms which are available for rent. This area really is tranquil and without traffic, unlike downtown Ubud. I was given the tour and the comfortable rooms with porch or balcony will run you $100 per night ( though I was told you can bargain). Across from the museum and the available rooms is the family house which I also got a tour of. This isn’t for rent but the whole place seemed to gel together in some weird way. I think the house was the original structure followed by the museum and the family still live here. I sat out in one of the bale’s sipping a hot tea with a staff member who told me about the place and about her family.
I think if a visitor came here they might be the only guests as prices promise to be high for this exclusive jewelry. This isn’t the back street Celuk deal where a local will knock out 500 pieces of surfer jewelry for you.
It is though another little part of Bali that seems unique, I’d probably never come here if I weren’t writing for a website and this place would be great to stay at if I didn’t mind the price.
I said goodbye to the staff and set off back to Kuta. I didn’t buy that diamond encrusted broach that I set my heart on but promises to wait till my shirts are up the level.
You can make it from Kuta to the RUNA is an hour my car or motorbike.
Museum RUNA iso pen daily from 9am - 5pm

We’ll be in Bali 2 weeks tomorrow for 31 days. [If you think that 31 days is a strange length of stay in view of the 30 day visa, well yes it is. There's a reason, but that's another story!]
We combine the “package deal” for economy and convenience, with the “do your own thing” for the reasons that Mark mentioned.
6 nights at the Bali Ayu in Seminyak. 4 nights at the Tjampuhan in Ubud. After that we provisionally plan for a few days each in Padang Bai, Candi Dasa and Amed, then back to not far from the airport for the last 3 or 4 days.
[Hey Nick, how about one of your great maps for the Candi Dasa area?]
Accomodation. Padang Bai, don’t know, but must have room security and security box for passports etc. Candi Dasa, have checked out Kubu Bali on the net. Looks romantic. Amed, maybe Good Karma, something different!
Any comments or suggestions are welcome.
Maybe we’ll meet up, Nick.

Stavros, you will find a ton of places down in the Kuta area. I’m not a jewelry buff so can’t tell you if the stuff is real silver but enough people shop that I think most of its will be. The ’silver jewelry capitol’ is Celuk. The main street is lined for a sbout a mlie with silver jewelry shops and makers. I think you will find what you want there.

Will work on that Candi Dasa map.
Thanks Nick. i guess ill have to make the trip to Celuk. thanks again,
selemat jalan !!
Nick those rooms for rent @ 100 Bucks a night look lovely and clean although i am damn sure i would haggle them down from this price mate. As you have stated b4 Nick that with room occupancey running at nearer to 33% in most establishments and the majority of high end hotels it is a buyers market.
What do you reckon as a marker Nick you could haggle those 100$ rooms down to as a general guide eh ? Nick as you well know there are some beautiful hotels dotted all over Bali…ranging from budget to top end.
Now all you folks who are thinking of hitting Bali in the near future take my tip (or really what i have learnt from Nicky boy ) and just get a flight and then sort your accom. out when you get there. The reasons for this are ;
a/ You are guaranteed a room somewhere as there is absolutely no danger of the hotels/hostels/villa/apartemts etc all being full.
b/You will get a better deal than if you pre-book because if you shop around and are prepared to haggle a bit (not too much though…just be fair ) you could find some out of this world deals as it is a buyers market.
C/ You can pick your location and also if you want to move location you can as you choose.
D/ There is no chance of being unhappy with your hotel as you CHOOSE !
So folks get on down while you can get some amzing deals…. not only with your hotels but also with Food and drink. Dont forget though that things alawaychange and you may find when things get back to normal in the future you may look back and regret not taking advantadge of the great deals that are there NOW yes NOW folks yes NOW NOW NOW folks ! So as old Bali Barrie would say get on down to Paradisimo NOW yes NOW folks NOW NOW NOW NOW !!!!!!
I am sure Nick will be only to pleased to meet upwith you and as he says buy you a drink. Although i can just picture 2 busloads all of a sudden turning up at Internet Outpost all asking for Nick of Bali Blog…….could bequite expensive eh Nick mate eh !!!
So everyone beg borrow or or or or whatever you have to do to get the funds just do it as i am sure as you lie on the golden sands lapping the rays up with a cool cocktail in one hand and and say maybe another cocktail in the other hand you will not regret it. I am hoping to be there in October so you can always buy me a drink as well as Nick.(hee hee) So as i have said ….GET ON DOWN FOLKS
Smiles all round
Mark
