Visa On Arrival (VOA) news in Bali Indonesia

Various news sources quoted Minister of Justice as saying there will be changes to the Visa On Arrival (VOA) on August 1st 2005. Hamid Awaluddin said that the cost of the 30 VOA will stay at $25, while the $10 Short Term Visa has been extended from 3 to 6 days.

Additional countries have been added to the list of countries enjoying the benefits of Visa On Arrival. These are: Belgium, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Spain, Portugal, Maldives, Russia, Egypt, Austria, Qatar, Ireland, Luxembourg, China and India.

If you are planning a trip to Bali and want to apply for a VOA check this list of existing countries on the plan.

USA, Australia, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, United Arab Emirates, Finland, Hungary, UK, Italy, Japan, Germany, Canada, South Korea, Norway, France, Poland, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Taiwan.

One wonders why Netherlands has not been included seeing as it used to be a colonial power and so many Dutch people come to Indonesia. I think there is still some resentment harbored in the government towards those times and they make the visa issue a way of getting back at the Dutch. The same thing exists in India. Its twice as expensive for me (British) to get a long term visa for India than someone from the US.

The visa-free facility is available to people from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Macau Special Administrative Region, Chile, Morocco, Peru, and Vietnam.

G’Day Nick,

Interesting point that about the Dutch. Here’s a link which might go some way to exploring the factor http://www.balidiscovery.com/messages/message.asp?Id=2651

I like the statement ‘Historical reasons’!

Now this is that kind of news that comes just one minute too late! I’ll be arriving Bali on the 30th of July, apparently just 2 days prior to the new rules that would have saved me a lot of trouble and some money!
I had to get a Visa here in Portugal and because I live in the North of Portugal, some 4 hour drive from the capital (and the Indonesian embassy), I had to pay the travel agent to get me the Visa!!! So imagine my frustration reading about the new regulation for Portuguese nationals entering Bali… oh my hard earn money, I will sure miss you…

When you arrive at Denpasar Airport and you need to purchase a Visa on Arrival, in what currency do you have to purchase it with? If they require it to be purchased with Indonesian currency, how does one obtain the correct currency after stepping of the aircraft and before getting to Customs/Immigration?

Michael, they require payment in US dollars. If you don’t have US dollars you must go to the money changer that is set specially for this.

Nick,

need your advice. Is the new VOA policy taking effect really? I am going to Bali end of Aug. As I hold chinese passport, not sure if I should apply visa in advance. The VOA can save a lot of money for me.
