Vegan & Vegetarian restaurants in Bali

One of my email questions today was to find out if there is a selection of vegan restaurants in Bali. My diet consists of rice, potatoes, veg and meat, so I’m not exactly the best person to ask. Using a couple of sites though, I was quickly able to offer some information.

What exactly is a vegan? I always thought of it as a more hardcore version of a vegetarian. Wikipedia gives us the low-down on what exactly we’re dealing with.

Two sites that came to mind were Happy Cow’s Vegetarian Guide / Bali, and BaliEats / vegetarian. I think a pure vegan is going to be hard to please, but a regular veggie should love Bali. My friends from Oregon were all veggies and found great food, Batan Waru, Tutmak, etc. Many Bali restaurants offers veggie dishes and you can always ask the chef to swap the pork chop for a chunk of tofu / tempe.

Bon appetit.
