Ubud is a good place to head to if you are staying in the Kuta area and want something new. The whole place is arts oriented and offers a much quieter and more personal encounter with the Balinese locals. A good way to get to Ubud is by Perama bus, the private little bus company with scheduled trips. These are NOT tour buses, but simply transport from A to B. Perama has an office on lower Jl. Legian in Kuta and the buses leave for Ubud at 1000, 1330, 1630, price 20,000rp. Arriving in Ubud you will be dropped off at the Perama bus office on lower Jl. Hanoman in the southern part of town. There are usually taxis hanging and touts hanging around offering free transport to hotels and guesthouses. If you feel uncomfortable taking their advice just walk up Jl. Hanoman and you will see many signs for guesthouses, most are 50,000rp per night for 1 person.
Perama bus has a schedule with prices, allowing you to access the main tourist spots on the island. They also have an 'island hopping' service, travelling by land and sea as far as Flores. From the Perama offices in Kuta and Ubud you can arrange day trips, flight ferry and train ticketing, rafting, water-sports, bicycle, motorbike and car rental, trekking, hotel reservations and traditional Balinese dance shows. Perama's Ubud area tour include: The ARMA museum, Goa Gajah, Pejeng, Gunung Kawi, Tampaksiring, Antonio Blanco Museum, Ubud Cultural Center, Puri Lukisan Museum, Heron Sanctuary, Sebatu rice fields, hiking and scenic walks.
Walking around Ubud you will see many small operators offering similar things, it pays to check out a couple of different ones and price shop. The main Tourist Information Office is located on Jl. Raya Ubud, just around the corner (left) at the top of Monkey Forest Rd. They offer an array of brochures ranging from rafting, trekking, kite-making, dessert cooking, Balinese music performances, ceramic making, Balinese dance instruction, paper printing. They also have a board with daily coach tours to the main tourist attractions in Bali.
Across the street and up a small lane called Jl. Kakeng. About 200 meters up the hill is a little office for Padma Shuttle bus. They also offer island-wide tours and can change your flight for you.

Hi Nick, I’m going to be in Bali with hubby and 1 year old boy for a short 4 days trip at the end of August. Hubby wants to go shopping, we’re thinking textiles, and personal items. Could you hook us up with anyone who’d be willing to take us around for two days? Thanks!
Hi Nick, I’ve been reading your blog eversince stumbling upon it while doing research about my next trip to Bali. I’ll be in Bali at the end of August with my husband and 1-year old boy for a short 4 days visit. My husband is looking forward to doing some shopping, probably textile and personal items. I’m hoping that you’d be able to help us hook up with someone who could maybe guide us for two days. We’re from Malaysia, so we’ll understand Bahasa Indonesia and English. Thanks a lot!
