Spas in Bali: How do they differ?

spa112805.jpgFrom my experience visiting hotel and independent spas in Bali, there are a lot of differences. Some of the common themes are that water is used in some way, whether it be a jacuzzi, whirlpool, saunas and steam rooms. An assortment of international massage techniques, Swedish, shiatsu, deep tissue etc. are usually offered. Add to this a Balinese element incorporating local healing techniques and tropical concoctions that are applied to the skin in rejuvenating facials, enlivening body scrubs and stimulating wraps.

There are often what you might refer to as 'sexy extras' which include make-up application, manicures, pedicures, hair coloring and other services.

How to define the type of spa?

Destination Spa
A spa whose main purpose is to provide customers with the benefits of lifestyle changes through a variety of health and wellness programs and complimentary therapies. On site accommodation and spa cuisine. An example of this would be Prana Spa in Seminyak.

Resort Hotel Spa
A spa located within a resort hotel that offers various spa treatments performed by qualified personnel, spa cuisine, health and wellness choices. On site accommodation. An example of this would be the Ritz Carlton Jimbaran Bay.

Day Spa
A spa for use on a day basis that offers various spa treatments performed by qualified personnel. An example of this would be BodyWorks in Seminyak.

Fitness Spa
A centre whose fundamental purpose is fitness, but may also offer various spa treatments performed by qualified personnel. I’m not aware of a dedicated fitness spa in Bali although many of the resort spas offer a fitness center (weights, running machines, pool).

Medical Spa
A spa whose fundamental purpose is to provide clients with medical care from qualified practitioners, in a facility that also provides various spa treatments and complementary therapies performed by qualified personnel. On site accommodation, dietary and nutritional programs.

Mineral Springs Spa
A spa that uses water from a local hot springs or seawater to invigorate and treat ailments. Bali has hot springs and there are bathing pool areas. An example of this is Mimpi Resort Menjangan.

Cruise Ship Spa
A spa aboard a cruise ship that provides various spa treatments including fitness, spa cuisine, health and a little financial investing advice thrown in for good measure.

No 'happy endings' in any of these places, but you will certainly feel better. If you are on a slimline budget and want the absolute rock bottom in massages, try one of the massage ladies on Kuta Beach. Prices highly negotiable.

I have just returned from a very quick week in Bali and stayed at a relatively new hotel with spa facilities - Febri’s - Jalan Kartika. This hotel offers very reasonably priced treatments in a wonderful surrounding.I have had many varied spa treatments in Bali and this would be one of the best and strangely one of the best priced as well.
