No matter what they tell you at an internet cafe about the speed of their connection, you will almost always be sharing that connection with the other customers. So if the sign says '512 connection' and there are 15 monitors, you are getting a piece of that. If someone is in there downloading music, the speed for the whole place will crawl. It's a good idea to get to an internet cafe mid morning of mid afternoon, when everyone is at the beach.
Things I look for before I sit down in an internet cafe are location of the speakers, because I don't like loud music in my ear, the amount of glare on the monitor (sit away from the window), availability of USB ports. In some cafes they have 1 or 2 machines with USB ports only.
When typing a long email you might want to type it in Word, saving it as you go, then copy and paste it into your email form. Just recently I saw a Japanese lady get frustrated because her 30 minute message disappeared.
For downloading photos to the computer, I find the easiest way is to use Windows Explorer. (Programs, Accessories, Windows Explorer). As long as the software for your camera is installed on the machine you can do this. When I can see all the photos represented on my camera, via the monitor, I just do Ctrl A (select all), Ctrl C (copy), then choose a destination (My Docs) then Ctrl V (paste). Very simple. I see people having a hard time screwing around with their software and tell them this is easy.
