A great place to shop for Bali books is Periplus bookstore, located inside Made’s Warung Seminyak. Once you get into the garden of the restaurant, you will see Periplus on the right side. The bookstore stocks the hole range of famous Bali books, including, Our Hotel in Bali, Island of Bali, A Patch of Paradise. It flicked through Our Hotel in Bali, by Louise Koke, and was amazed that a book written about 1936 Bali, seemed like it could be about today, with stories and photos of Kuta Beach, building a small hotel out of bamboo and attending Balinese festivals.
Periplus also stocks Indonesian and Balinese phrase books and a selection of maps, including road maps and large wall maps. Rio Helmi’s book ‘Bali Style‘ , the great interior design guide to the phenomenon that is now international, is on sale, along with Made Wijaya’s book on Balinese gardens.
I could spend a whole day checking out the books here. Buying a selection of Bali books and spending a month holed up in a guest house in East Bali, learning about the history, culture and language of the island would be a very enjoyable thing to do.

My husband and I returned on 10 Dec 2006 from Kuta, Bali. Except for the last night, we have been having dinner ONLY at Made\’s Warung. Such a work of art this little watering hole is! Made\’s Warung\’s a real god-send! It\’s one reason that\’ll navigate us both back to Bali again.
