Outside my house in Seminyak is a parking area for the 4 residents. The good thing about this little space is that you have to go through a gate, which is shut at night, and there is often a security man in an office sitting there. I feel good about leaving my bike outside overnight, way better than on the street. In the middle of the parking area is a small family shrine tended by the owners. Everyday the owner places offerings outside all the houses to protect against evil spirits and gives offerings at the shrine. The shrine is relatively new and just down the street some locals have built huge one many times this size. There are over 20,000 temples in Bali when these small family temples and shrines are included.
The little temple structure in the middle of my parking area is called 'gedong'. In larger temples there are a selection of gedongs, each dedicated to a different deity or ancestor.
