The Day of Silence is over and from my perspective it seemed like the island was completely dead yesterday. My mental picture of Nyepi in a Balinese village is one of family members gathered in their small house, sitting on the floor, quietly contemplating the
meaning of the day.
In previous year however Nyepi has been a time to unleash pent up feelings. Last year in Denpasar, part of a neighborhood attacked the other part because it wanted to secede. The Jakarta Post reports that this wasn’t the only time this kind of thing has happened.
