New President sworn in and outlines objectives in Jakarta Indonesia

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has been sworn in and has promised to tackle corruption and nepotism.

I wish him the best and hope progress is made. He’ll have to start by putting some big names in jail and hope that sends a mesage. China had a big crackdown a decade ago and had 60 offenses that carried the death penalty. Not saying we need to go that far but maybe a little public flogging for corrupt police might add some mustard to the effort.

It always amazes me that, in order to prove how civilised and business-like they are, men in hot climates insist on wearing the English national dress. The man’s suit was originally designed for the outdoor activity of horseriding in the comparatively cool climate of Britain and Northern Europe and is totally unsuited to hot and humid countries. All it does is make the man feel physically uncomfortable and increase the need for airconditioning, which is both expensive and harmful to the environment.

So the men do something which is basically stupid in order to show how clever they are!

I agree Rex, Suits are not very attractive to me either!
I’d look twice…’well ok atleast half a dozen times or so’ at a guy in overalls, topless in board shorts or even in a Police uniform.. But a suit, nope just don’t interest me the suit look! Ties are ugly too, I don’t get the purpose of a tie!? Is there one?

G’Day Tracey,

I took my tie off 30 years ago and vowed never to put it back on!. I hate suits and all the bullshit…

I believe the man’s tie started out as a sweatrag or a neckerchief [used by cowbows to keep the dust out of their lungs or by bank robbers for obvious reasons]. I’ve heard that one reason men without ties can make the other men feel uneasy is that the tie indicates what tribe they belong to, therefore a man without a tie is an “unknown”.

Have you ever wondered why men traditionally go to functions such as balls or formal parties looking like they’re going to a business conference, whilst the ladies wear as little as they can reasonably get away with? It’s so that the men can look rich and successful, accompanied by their dependant sexual playthings.

My friend Mike who is married to the lady who graces our header told me last year he flew from Northern California to Orange County in Southern California wearing the typical formal wear of an Indonesian…black pants and a longsleeve batik shirt. He said on the plane and in the airport women were checking him out and the men were looking him like some kind of weirdo, the combo of neat pants and funky shirt buttoned up without a tie made them feel uneasy.
