Mama Kuma: One Woman, Two Cultures at the Ubud Writers Festival

While browsing the Bali Advertiser today I came across a familiar face. It was Debbie Carlyon, wife of a good friend of mine from Australia. Debbie is an award winning author whose book 'Mama Kuma: One Woman, Two Cultures' will be featured at the Ubud Writer & Readers Festival in October.

Debbie book is about her grandmother (Mama Kuma) who was from the Chimbu tribe in the highlands of New Guinea. She was the first member of her tribe to encounter white people and ended up marrying an Australian surveyor. Her story is amazing, from the time she first sees a 'ghost walking' to the time she boards a Cessna to fly away, the whole tribe crying as they thought she would never return.

Debbie was brought up in Goroka in the highlands of New Guinea and in Australia. She has 2 identities, one of a modern educated woman, the other, a deeply rooted New Guinea tribal person. A very interesting woman and book.

The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival is scheduled for October 8-11 (workshops 6-11)
