It is Kuningan today which is huge in the Balinese calendar. The ancestors who have been visiting families all over Bali will leave for heaven today and temples all over the island have been having ceremonies to commemorate this. Tanah Lot is one of the most important temples in Bali, located NW of Canggu on the coast. I rode out there from Seminyak and the journey took about 30 minutes. The parking lot at Tanah Lot was crowded with motorbikes and other vehicles. There were tourist buses with Taiwanese tourists too, but the majority of visitors today were Balinese.
There are many temples in the Tanah Lot area and I didn't want to hit the main one like all the tourists. At the bottom end of the parking lot down some steps is Pura Luhur Pakendungan. The great thing about this area is there are beautiful rice fields and watching the Balinese people walking in procession carrying offerings is a picture of paradise. Women generally wear brighter colors than men who stick to white and yellow. Its also the women who carry the baskets of offerings on their heads. Tanah Lot has a small fee for entrance, but I blazed through the toll gate and told the parking attendant I was not going into the main temple, just looking at the other ones from the outside.
